Police incited attacks on Christians

A fact-finding team assessing attacks against Christians in Karnataka has held the state government “directly responsible for allowing violence to spread”.

“The Bajrang Dal’s role has been established and we’d apprise the Centre of our findings,” Josh said.The team’s investigations revealed that first churches and schools were attacked, said Harcharan Singh Josh, the fact-finding team and National Commission for Minorities (NCM) member. These attacks were “followed by male policemen beating up innocent women and children (as) the top state officials and ministers remained mute spectators”. Read it all

The fact-finding team also found the pattern of attacks similar to those in Orissa.

“The Bajrang Dal’s role has been established and we’d apprise the Centre of our findings,” Josh said.

The observations against Bajrang Dal came on a day when the Centre turned the heat on organisations responsible for attacks on Christians in Orissa and Karnataka.

The report is expected to strengthen the case for a central directive under Article 355 of the Constitution to Karnataka and Orissa. The Centre has been worried at the “inability or reluctance” of the two states to take effective steps, a senior government official said.

Girija Vyas, another team member and chairperson of the National Commission for Women, said the state police’s role was “shocking and shameful”. During its tour of the worst-affected district, Mangalore, the team concluded that “there was no law and order in the state”.

More churches attacked in Karnataka

MANGALORE/CHIKMAGALUR/KOLAR: Even before the dust on the attacks on prayer halls on Sunday could settle, a fresh wave of attacks has been reported. Three incidents have been reported since Tuesday night even after the ruling BJP government threatened to act tough against those responsible for the attacks.

Unidentified persons broke into a church in Ujire, 70 km from Mangalore, in Dakshina Kannada district and another at Gorigandi in Chikmagalur district and ransacked it, police said on Wednesday.

In Kolar, a statue of Virgin Mary was damaged on Wednesday morning. At Ujjire, miscreants desecrated the St George Church belonging to Syro Malabar Catholic Rite under Diocese of Belthangady in the early hours. They gained entry by breaking the front door lock and burned the Bible, prayer books and destroyed holy icons.

The miscreants threw away the tabernacle where the Blessed Sacrament was kept. They also set the carpets inside the church afire. The incident came to light when the parish priest, and others came to the church for mass at 6 am. They informed Joseph Valiaparambil, vicar general of the bishop's house. Joseph in turn informed the authorities.

Stating that the police inspector and tahsildar arrived and assessed the situation, Jospeh said the diocese strongly condemned the act. "We are not violent and do not believe in violence. We respect the administration and the law of the land. We respect all religions. The Christian community need protection from these kinds of anti-social, anti-religious activities," Joseph said.

In Chikmagalur district, one church was vandalised by miscreants at Gorigandi. The St Thomas church was attacked by three people who came on a motorcycle and broke open the door and damaged prayer mater ials. Balehonnur police have registered a complaint given by Fagin. This is the fifth attack on a church since September 14 in the district.

In Kolar district, miscreants damaged the statue of Virgin Mary outside the St Mary's church in Kolar town in the wee hours of Wednesday. They hurled stones at the church breaking window panes.

As the news spread, people Christians assembled near the church and expressed concern over the incident. Chief of the Roman Catholic church Fredrick urged the district administration to take action to nab the culprits. Link

Annanagar Mar Thoma Church appeals to President Patil and Chief Minister Patnaik

Annanagar Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church, Chennai, sent a mass petition to President Pratibha Patil and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday September 7, 2008 expressing concern over the continued persecution of minorities in Orissa. Church offered special prayers for the persecuted as well as the persecutors during the Qurbana. Rev. Joseph Chacko, the vicar, exhorted the congregation on the need of constant vigil to safeguard the God given freedom and the need to exercise that freedom responsibly. Mar Thoma Church has mission centres in Orissa. The Church members though were safe in the recent outbursts of violence there, are living in constant fear. The church provides education and hostel facilities to the tribal children to continue their studies.

Indian Christians mourn priest's killing, despair of justice

Bangalore, India (ENI). Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of a priest brutally killed in India's southern Andhra Pradesh state, with a warning that Christians are losing faith in the country's ability to bring to justice those responsible for a string of communal attacks.

The Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church Thamil Suvesesha Lutheran Thiruchabai Membership: 103,093 This church is a lineal descendant of the Danish-Halle mission enterprise which began when Bartholomew Ziegenbalg and Pluetschau landed at the Danish crown colony of Tranquebar in 1706. Under J. P. Fabricius, C. F. Schwartz, and others, a confessionally Lutheran community of many thousands arose in and around Tranquebar, Tanjore, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli -- provided with Tamil Bible, catechism and hymnal, and a parochial school system. When rationalism attacked the church in the homelands after 1800, the Danish--Halle mission declined rapidly in vigor and Anglicans of the Church Missionary Society began to assume responsibility for the former Lutheran community. It was to renew the enterprise of the former Danish-Halle mission that the Dresden-Leipzig Mission sent J. H. C. Cordes to the area in 1840 (and forty-four others between 1840 and 1880), a decision which led to the restoration of many Tamil Christians to their former Lutheran allegiance. Swedish Lutherans began to assist the Leipzig Mission in 1849. In 1874 the Church of Sweden Mission assumed responsibility for a share of the Tamil field, and in 1901 a separate Swedish diocese was created. In 1919 the Church was formally established, adopting the episcopal form of polity. On the 250th anniversary of the arrival of Ziegenbalg and Pluetschau in 1956, Dr. Rajah B. Manikam was consecrated the first Indian bishop of the Tamil Church, succeeding Swedish Bishop J. Sandegren. Rajah B. Manikam served as the Executive Secretary of the Christian Council of India and Pakistan before he became the bishop. He was a powerful speaker and has been well known for his work, Christianity and the Asian Revolution. Headquarters of the church are in Trichinopoly. A theological seminary is maintained in Tranquebar. Rt. Rev. Dr. J.G.Johnson was the ninth bishop. He was succeeded by Rt. Rev. Dr. T. Aruldoss.

Mar Thoma Youth Conference

About 380 young members of the Mar Thoma Church got together from May 1y 29 to June 1 at the Hindustan College of Ebngineering, Padur, Chennai. The Conference was named "CEDARS ' 08" and was hosted by the Chennai Centre Mar Thoma Yuvajana Sakhyam organized by the youth wing of the . The Bishop of the Chennai-Bangalore Diocese of the Mar Thoma church Rt. Rev. Dr. Gheevarghese Mar Thodocius presided over the Conference. The theme for study was "ROOTING FOR FRUITING" based on the Psalm 1:3 from the Bible. Rev. Abraham Scariah of the Mar Thoma Counseling Centre was the Main Speaker.Rev. Vinod Victor, from the CSI Diocese of South Kerala led the Bible studies. Com. Jacob and Rani from the Scripture Union, Mr. Prince Solomon and Mrs. Princey Solomon of the Madras Christian College were the other leaders. It was the Third such conference of the Diocese. A lot of money and effort by the clergy and young leaders of Chennai were pooled into the success of the Conference. I was telling my friend Liba Varghese who was one of the leaders of the Conference to look critically into the effectiveness of such meetings. Certainly it has got the positive values of bringing young members together into fellowship which is very much needed in the post modern context of individualism; also it awakens youngsters to the spiritual dimension of human life. Further it promotes the interests of the Mar Thoma Community. All these are necessarily good in themselves. However the larger interests of the Church and Society are neglected in most of such conferences. Youngsters are fed with a lopsided spirituality fostered by self interests and the narrow vision of the community. Inter religious, inter-cultural and interdenominational vision of a broader society must be the theological focus of any such programmes. The leaders of the Church must see that inter-cultural sessions are included in the programme in order to promote a vision of wider community, which goes beyond the boundaries of one particular community, though the interests of the community has got its place in the development of individuals.
